Plant-derived exosomes
Plant extracellular vesicles from plant cell suspension cultures.
In addition to botanical active ingredients for the cosmetics industry, our range of plant-derived ingredients includes the proposed plant extracellular vesicles (Plant EVs), more commonly known as plant-derived exosomes, which we produce from plant cell suspension cultures.
Our NATRISE® EXOSOME biotechnology platform benefits from the biological mechanisms of plant cells: our plant-derived exosomes are the result of physiological processes occurring in plant cells cultured in liquid medium and are released by the plant cells in a completely natural way, without exogenous intervention. A production method that preserves the integrity of plant-based exosomes.
We can produce high quantities/industrial scale-up of plant-based exosomes that are supplied in liquid form and are suitable for cosmetic formulations for external use such as creams, serums and masks.
What are exosomes
Vesicles with enormous potential.
Exosomes are efficient carriers of information and bioactive molecules between cells even distant from each other. In fact, because of their lipid coating, they are able to protect their contents all the way to the target cells. Because of their function as “communicators and carriers” between cells, and because they are able to penetrate not only the surface layers of the skin but also the deeper ones, they are among the most innovative ingredients in the cosmetics industry.
As efficient intercellular carriers, exosomes are highly valued by cosmetic formulators because they are able to enhance the efficacy of certain ingredients traditionally used in cosmetics.
They find application in state-of-the-art cosmetic treatments that aim to visibly improve the appearance of the skin through:
- Skin rejuvenation and smoothing of wrinkles, fine lines and age-related skin blemishes;
- Counteracting sagging skin by promoting skin tone and elasticity;
- Anti-ageing treatments to retard the skin’s ageing processes by protecting it from oxidative damage and environmental stress;
- Skin regeneration and repair from damage caused, for example, by inadequate sun exposure or acne;
- Anti-inflammatory and anti-reddening properties , benefiting the most delicate skin.
Hair beauty also benefits from the use of exosomes: due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties on the scalp and supporting the physiological life cycle of the hair, exosomes are chosen for the most modern cosmetic hair treatments.
Exosomes in cosmetics: anti-ageing, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,
anti-pollution and cell regeneration properties.
Plant-derived exosomes for the cosmetics industry
NATRISE® EXOSOME products and pipeline.
ABR produces plant-derived exosomes for cosmetic companies that choose new cosmetic ingredients of plant origin for their products. Innovation, in fact, is essential to stand out and to meet the demands of a dynamic and demanding market such as the cosmetic market, which is increasingly focused on skin well-being.
We are one of the few producers worldwide who are able to produce litres of purified plant-based exosomes with a concentration of between 4×1011 and 4×1013 exosomes/litre from suspended plant cell cultures.
Our plant-based exosomes, being the result of the NATRISE® EXOSOME production process that excludes the use of products of animal origin, also meet the demands of companies that want plant ingredients for cosmetics suitable for the vegan market.
Our proposal of plant-based exosomes includes exosomes produced from plant cell lines already present in our extensive Biobank, which includes plants traditionally used in cosmetics, and exosomes from new and distinctive plant cell lines including:

Customised Solutions Service
At the customer's request, we produce plant-based exosomes from specific plants.
Exosomes are among the key ingredients in the latest cosmetic formulations. They are gaining so much importance, both for professionals in the industry and in the eyes of the public, that they are becoming the stars of the communications of the cosmetics companies that use them.
At ABR, we want to be at our customer’s side in implementing their business plans, even those requiring distinctive cosmetic ingredients such as plant-based exosomes from certain plants. Therefore, at the customer’s request, we are available to start plant cell cultures from specific plants to produce plant-based exosomes.
We offer the customer our advice and know-how on plant species to finalise production and industrial scale-up through our NATRISE® EXOSOME production biotechnology.
The production process, step-by-step
We are among the few producers worldwide capable of producing high quantities of plant-based exosomes from plant cell suspension cultures.
ABR has, since its inception, believed in innovative and environmentally friendly biotechnologies such as the NATRISE® EXOSOME platform. Our plant cell cultures produce plant-based exosomes in a controlled environment, without fertilisers and pesticides, and require only a small portion of the plant of interest for their initiation. Plant-based exosomes are also released from plant cells suspended in the liquid medium in a completely natural way.
No animal products or GMOs are used during the production of our plant-based exosomes.
Our NATRISE® EXOSOME production process is designed to offer high production capacity and to achieve industrial scale-up with economic benefits as well.
Selection of the plant of interest.
Plant tissue explantation and callus induction.
Growth of plant cell cultures in flask.
Scale-up in bioreactor.
Purification of EVs.
Finished product: plant-based exosome for cosmetic use.
